Background

The goal of the renovation was clear: to transform the arena into a versatile venue capable of hosting everything from high-energy concerts to thrilling sports events. To realize this vision, a team of experts was brought in to deliver a world-class experience for every guest and visitor.

Assignment

A standout feature of the renovation is the arena’s progressive approach to acoustics. Efterklang was engaged for acoustic engineering and sound design, which included the creation of a retractable interior canopy. This innovative structure can be adjusted to direct sound precisely where it’s needed, enhancing audio clarity for various events. When deployed, the canopy amplifies sound from the stage or rink to the audience and vice versa. When retracted, it reveals the arena’s original post-modern dome architecture, preserving its historical essence.

Beyond the interior canopy, another key acoustic consideration was ensuring sound clarity, a vital element for fully experiencing music, art, and especially sports. In ice hockey, for instance, the sounds of the game are not just thrilling but also rich in detail, adding depth and excitement to the overall atmosphere.

The addition of gondola seating introduces a unique perspective, with seats slightly overhanging the seating bowl to create an immersive vantage point. Paired with the new canopy, architectural enhancements, and integrated technology, the venue’s acoustics have been carefully designed to deliver a heightened auditory experience, making every moment more vivid and captivating for fans.

Result

Throughout the renovation, there was a steadfast commitment to celebrating Avicii Arena’s storied history while integrating contemporary features. The result is a venue that not only acknowledges its past but is also poised to host world-class events for decades to come.
