Background

Kronprinsen in Malmö is an iconic landmark of the city. Built in 1964 and standing 82 meters tall, the building was once Sweden’s tallest residential structure and houses both apartments and commercial spaces. The property has undergone extensive renovation and modernization efforts to adapt the facilities and structures of the area to meet contemporary standards and needs. This process has been a significant milestone in preserving the building’s historical heritage while considering Kronprinsen’s role within the modern urban landscape. Kronprinsen remains a central part of Malmö’s vibrant city environment and a reminder of the city’s commitment to progress and renewal.

Assignment

Efterklang has been responsible for the acoustic design of exclusive duplex apartments on the 28th floor, as well as the acoustic planning of new commercial spaces in attractive, modern environments. The design of these residences and facilities was aimed at ensuring excellent sound environments, addressing the challenges posed by a complex mix of uses and the integration of both new and old building structures.

In addition, Efterklang has developed a conceptual sound design for Kronprinsen’s shopping center, with a particular focus on creating a pleasant auditory experience in the new food court and its surrounding areas.

Result

Efterklang created a concept with two main objectives: to enhance Kronprinsen’s identity and brand through sound design and to create a pleasant and welcoming auditory environment that encourages people to linger.

Drawing inspiration from Kronprinsen’s history as a 1960s landmark, we curated playlists for the food court with a strong retro vibe.

The restroom clusters were given a playful twist with 1960s pop hits and classic tunes from the Skåne region.

The small play area came to life with whimsical sound effects.

Additionally, Kronprinsen’s iconic indoor fountain was given a completely new expression in collaboration with our sister agency Light Bureau: a few times a day, the fountain transforms into an atmospheric audiovisual experience, featuring artistic lighting and sound design.
